100 Mile Sliders are pleased to offer 3 days of packed reining fun, from beginner to advanced riders. Join Lynda Smith of Maple Ridge Level 2 EC Reining Coach and BC Horse Council Coach of the Year (2000), for a Friday/Saturday reining/horsemanship clinic and a Sunday reining schooling show. 

Reining is designed to highlight the athletic ability of the “ranch type” horse in the confines of the show arena. Often referred to as “western dressage”, it requires great horsemanship to achieve the willfully guided or controlled horse that shows no resistance.

Of course most of us have not achieved that level, and that is why we all need a lesson or two to get started or to get better. So please join us in making our first clinic/show a success.   

Clinic will run as follows, with 2-3 people per group. Please let us know if you are a beginner rider or you have a very beginner horse and we will try to group accordingly.

Here is a some information on Lynda Smith, who will be conducting a reining/horsemanship clinic, in 100 Mile on April 9/10, and then judging our Reining Schooling show on April 11th.

Lynda Smith attained her Western Coaching Level 1 in 1997. In 1998 & 1999 she apprenticed with an established Reining Horse trainer. Also in 1999, Lynda Smith and APHA 'Justin's Tyke' were named WCRA Open & Novice Horse Open Champions. She also won the BCRA Breeders Classic 3 yr. old Futurity on 'Docz Sunup Play'.

The fall of 1999, saw Lynda move to the Lower Mainland of BC, to start her own business, Mane Stream Reining. After spending countless hours traveling, to teach Horsemanship to all that would listen, Lynda was honored by the Horse Council of BC as "Coach of the Year 2000". She successfully completed her Level 2 Reining Coach certification in 2001.

Competing on National and International levels, Lynda Smith has proven herself as a competitor winning a number of Open Reining Championships through 2007. Notably, competing in the NRHA Futurity 2002 on 'Lacys Dun Dual'n' then the pair earned 5 Reining Canada Top 10 honors in 2003.  WCRA Open awards in 2004 with 'Ole San Cocoa Lena', then 3 Yr Old Futurity Wins on 1/2 Arab "Miss Mellie" & Appaloosa "Savanna Jackson" against a field of Quarter Horses in 2007.

As a coach, Lynda has encouraged over 160 riders to enter the Reining pen and become a part of the sport.  From Green as Grass beginners through Rookie to Non-Pro, she has produced calm, focussed riders who excel at their levels.  Lynda's patience and clear explanations make her riding lessons and clinics an exciting learning experience.

After a 2 year break from riding and training, 2010 has seen Lynda return to the Reining world. She currently has 15 regular students in the Lower Mainland of BC and is finishing AQHA "Suddenly Smart" (owned by Sherea Williams) to be her Open competition horse this year. Lynda Smith is a certified EC Level 2 Reining Coach. She is the process of becoming certified to EC Level 3 Reining as well as pursuing her NRHA Judges Card.

We are proud to announce that we will be hosting a Lynda Smith reining/horsemanship clinic, backed with a reining schooling show, on FRIDAY, APRIL 9th-SUNDAY, APRIL 11th. This is a great opportunity to get some quality instruction, and then to put your new learning to the test in a non stressful, supportive setting, with constructive feedback. Clinic participants will sign up in groups of 1-3 for one and a half hour sessions with Lynda on Friday and Saturday. Then on Sunday, we will have a schooling show, with many WCRA modified classes, for beginners, as well as a freestyle class, and an full NRHA pattern class, for the brave at heart!!

OK-I know this post isn't specifically related to reining, but I was turned onto this site a few weeks ago, and feel the need to share it with as many people as possible!

This girl is SPOT ON in her commentary! I have spent a few (ok-LOTS of) hours now just reading some of the back posts, (and attached commentary-often 100's of responses to most posts) and she NAILS bad practice in the horse industry, outing horse abusers, pointing out bad back yard breeding practices, highlighting poorly written and misrepresented horses for sale, showing horses that are promoted strictly for their "color" despite the fact that they have terrible conformation, listing horses that go through sale auctions and the outcomes, showcasing good and bad rescue operations, and the list goes on. ANYONE involved in the horse industry-as a breeder, buyer, beginner, seller, or just wanting to become informed should be reading this blog!! Check it out-but be prepared to spend some time!! And be warned-she doesn't mince words (guess what the "F" stands for in "Fugly") when she is pointing out things that she considers to be unethical, or stupid....

Cueing your horse for the turn and spin

LARRY TROCHA (reining and cutting trainer) just uploaded two new training videos to youtube. In this two-part video series, he shows what cues the rider needs to use to ask a horse for correct turns and spins.  Special attention is given to how the rider should use his hands (look at his arm position in the spin, Tiffany!!), legs and seat to get a good response from the horse.

Early reports indicate that those people who attended Amanda's clinic this past weekend came away with lots of new information, and a refreshed excitement about reining! Congratulations to DAWNNA, MANDY, TIFFANY and KIM who all took advantage of this opportunity to work and learn with Amanda! The more educated we become, and the more we learn as a group, the more we will be able to promote and support each other as we develop as a reining club! AMANDA SELF CLINIC THIS WEEKEND!! -A few spots still available!!

Due to a few last minute cancelations there are a few spots still available for Amanda's clinic Saturday and Sunday February 20th, 21st at Easy Go Ranch in Lac La Hache. Cost is 150.00.

Riding times will be determined and communicated by Monday, February 15. The first class will go at 1:30 on Saturday afternoon as the arena had been booked for the morning prior to us contacting Easy Go.  There will be a potluck supper on Saturday at 5pm, in the mezzanine.  Given that there are not a lot of amenities close to the facility coffee, snacks and chilli on Sunday, will be provided for the riders.  If anyone has time to bake a few cookies or squares it'd be greatly appreciated.  Spectators are welcome.

As your new new president I thought it was time to introduce myself..as I had been promising Bella I would do all last year! I started riding at three when my parents bought me my first pony..she was rotton of course. I continued to love horses despite her.I have ridden dressage, jumping, gymkhana, cutting and pleasure showing....I rode dressage for 5 yrs with Rex Rhodes..I showed open  and apploosa as a youth and after my son was born I competed hunter jumper for a couple of years...I just didn't have the lion heart for that!  lol I bred quarter horses for a few years until my health deterioated and I sold off most of my herd except for a couple of brood mares and two riding horses...(at the time babys!)...both of the horses I compete on now.  I fell in love with reining about ten years ago and it has been my focus ever since...I do still enjoy showing and compete most weekends..I love trail class and horsemanship.

 I have ridden with such great clinicians as Roy Yates, Les Voight, Richard Shrake and Deana Millard, taking from each what knowledge they have had to pass on to make me a better horse person. I have also recently started to compete in barrel racing and joined the BCBRA  this year, hoping to do well.

 I suffer from severe rhumatoid arthritis which has caused me to make certain adaptations in the way I ride and compete...I, at the present time have little use of my hands so must make sure my horses are as light as they can be..I have a weak left leg that is numb  on the back side..I must think and make the leg move as it doesn't do that when it's tired....We all have things that we must over come-each of us has a hill or two we must climb...

 I hope this lets you know more about me and my goals. I will try to be the best president that I can be and hope we can all achieve our goals this year

When one thinks of the classic reining horse, the vision that comes to mind for most is of the compact, athletic, dependable Quarter Horse. However, it is important to recognize that ultimately, reining is really about good horses, and good horsemanship. Any horse can be taught the basic reining moves and will become a better horse as they learn how to be supple, and how to respond to subtle cues from the rider, and any person  who spends time learning about reining and how to develop a reining horse, WILL improve their overall horsemanship skills. These thoughts are important to keep in mind when considering:

a) the type of horse you currently own

b) the goals you have for yourself and your horse

c) your motivation for becoming involved with a reining club 

d) any future purchase of a horse

e) any future breedings you may be considering

We are extremely pleased to welcome Sharon Gates as our Reining Demo participant at our 2010, 100 Mile Horse Bazaar!

"Horses are the constant that define me", is the phrase that Sharon uses to describe herself and her outlook on life. A long time open level reining competitor, Sharon currently makes her home in Hanceville BC. She has a very well respected breeding program and offers training and lessons from beginners to open level. As well she hosts vacation getaways for those people wanting to vacation with their horses. A soon to be published author, Sharon will be showcasing her 2 studs at her reining demonstration:

AGRIPLEX

-The building inspector was to inspect the Agriplex on February. Depending on the outcome of that inspection, the Rotary Club will be handing over the reins to the user groups pending approval. Updates as to the status of the Agriplex will be posted here as I become aware of new developments

100 MILE HORSE BAZAAR

-This year, the Bazaar will be held at the 105 Arena March 27-28th 

- currently we have 3 sponsors-Grassland Equipment, Marine RV, and The Farriers Pub

-Saturday Dinner Auction at the Farriers Pub. Tickets to the auction will be sold through our Sliders Booth at the Bazaar. WE ARE IN NEED OF DONATIONS!!

-John McConville will run the door, Randy will be on the floor, Bella, Tiffany, and Kim will be organizing and manning the Sliders booth. ANYONE WISHING TO VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME TO ANY OF THESE AREAS, WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

EVENTS PLANNING DISCUSSION

-A separate meeting date was decided on, in order to brainstorm and discuss ideas for upcoming events that we may want to host this season. If you are interested in being involved with this please plan to attend a meeting WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10th at the RED ROCK CAFE, 6:00. Initial discussions included offers of clinics from Lynda Smith, Sherri Thomson, Amanda self, Clay Webster, and Gus Evangolopois. We will also discuss schooling shows, fund raiser ideas. 

 

EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE WCRA!!

West Coast Classic Will Welcome WEG Finalists! 

The members of Team Canada, who will compete at the World Equestrian 

Games in Kentucky in September will be chosen at West Coast Classic, it was 

announced today.  

This means that reiners such as NRHA Futurity Winner and Million Dollar Rider 

Duane Latimer may well be competing at our show this year. Duane won the 

Individual gold medal at the 2006 World Equestrian Games. After winning the 

Junior Reining at the 2009 AQHA World Show on Shiners Lena Dust, he said 

he’d like to take the 6-year-old to Kentucky to defend that title. If he wants to do 

that, he and his horse will have to come to Heritage Park in July! 

WCRA’s West Coast Classic has been chosen as Canada’s World Equestrian 

Games Selection finals, Sharon Hall learned in a phone call today from Ottawa. 

After WCRA voted at its AGM in November to make the pitch, Sharon got busy 

and put together a first class proposal that EC found too good to turn down. 

The World Equestrian Games, at which all the FEI disciplines decide their 

World Championships at one time and place, were first held in Stockholm in 

1990. Like the Olympics, WEG happens every four years and it wasn’t until 

2002, in Spain, that reining was included for the first time—the only western 

discipline that has a place in the FEI world. 

This year the games come to North America for the first time, to the newly 

refurbished Kentucky Horse Park, and Canadian reining will have its best 

opportunity ever to showcase itself to the world. 

Reiners who want to represent Canada at WEG in September have to first 

qualify by obtaining a score of at least 68 at three CRI competitions. Then they 

must vie for the coveted team positions at the Canadian WEG Selection finals. 

Each rider can compete on up to three horses. 

So – we’re over the first hurdle. We’ve won the bid. Now we need to roll up our 

sleeves and get to work. Fund raising is going to be “Job One” so start thinking 

about what you can do, and how you can help. We look forward to hearing from 

you and to working together with everyone in this great club, to make this show 

a tremendous success.
